Prong collar with a side release (quick release) buckle

The prong collar with the added sided release buckle was created
by Leashes by Design almost 10 years ago!!

Herm Sprenger collars with an 'aftermarket' side release (quick release) buckle added for easy on and off. Perfect if you use the same prong collar for multiple dogs, as you can quickly add or remove links. One link is removed from the standard prong collar and replaced with a side release buckle. The material on either side of the buckle is a black, nylon webbing. I can also use different colored webbing to allow you to quickly tell the difference between multiple dogs’ collars.

Herm Sprenger does make another style of side release buckle prong collar, however, their version does not have the chain martingale portion on the collar. And, if you are familiar with the use of prong collars, this chain is essential to get an effective correction!

The buckles on my prong collars have proven to be very reliable; however, they are still buckles and have the ability to break. If you purchase a complete, buckled prong collar directly from my company, I will repair any broken buckle, free of charge, during the first six months. The collar can either be returned to me for repair and return shipping ($8.00) will be charged. Or, I can send you a free buckle adapter kit for you to repair the collar yourself (shipping of $8.00 is charged). If you incur a broken buckle after that period of time, you may purchase a replacement buckle kit, as shown below, for $10.00, plus shipping.

Size recommendations - in an effort to reduce exchanges and additional cost to the customer, if you have any questions about size, please contact me prior to purchase. While the prong collar size is very dog specific, I (personally) would fit almost EVERY dog on a small linked prong collar. You are able to get a much better fit with a small prong because of the smaller size of the links. If your dog is larger (80+ pounds), has “issues” which require a heavier prong collar, or you want the security of a larger link for a larger dog, than I may recommend something larger.

Please see neck sizes in descriptions above for each collar size.

General breed recommendations:
Micro prong - toy or small breeds, dogs under 20-25#, neck size <12”
Small prong - Medium sized breeds (Spaniels, Standard Schnauzers, Terriers, etc.), dogs 25-80#, neck size <19”
Small prong - Medium to large sized breeds, depending on the dog - German Shepherds, Goldens, Pitbulls, Belgian breeds (Malinois, Terv, Sheepdog), etc.
Medium or Large prong - Medium to large sized breeds that needed the additional strength of a larger prong and a larger buckle. This size does NOT work as well for dogs with neck sizes less than 18”.

Buckle Adapter

Already have a prong collar and just want to buy the side release (quick release) buckle? Order a buckle adapter kit and add it to your current prong collar. Kits include all attaching hardware, as shown on the instructions page.

Size options when ordering:
Micro - plastic buckle, fits micro (1.6mm) prong collars
Small - metal buckle, fits small (2.25mm) prong collars
Medium - metal buckle, fits medium (3.0mm) and large (3.2mm) prong collars

* Please note, while these buckles are not difficult to add, if you have any issues with using your hands, I recommend purchasing the collar with the buckle already attached. It is not an option to mail me your prong collar to add the buckle.

SHIPPING COST FOR ADAPTERS OR CONNECTORS:

All shipping through this website starts at $8.00.
If you are purchasing only an adapter or connector, you can pay for first class (instead of priority) shipping through my Etsy store.

Please note - All prong collars are considered "training" collars and should NEVER be left on your dog unattended. There is a risk of injury through the misuse of ANY type of collar, so if you are unsure of the proper use of a prong collar, please consult a professional. Also, there is not a buckle in the world that is "fail proof". Please keep your dog's behavior and training in mind when purchasing a collar.

Backup collars and/or collars without buckles are recommended for aggressive dogs or dogs that are unreliable off lead. Leashes by Design cannot be held responsible for accidents or injuries to humans and/or animals.

I recommend having a "back up" method in place for all situations where safety is a priority. For example, my current dog is very reactive to loud noises and could bolt if he got loose and was scared. I do not use a back up when working my dog at our dog club (fully fenced), but I do use a back up during general walking or when we are at hotels.

What type of back up method works best? I recommend either a slip collar, which is sized too large for your dog, or one of my prong collar connectors, which can be found
HERE.
